Faith and Works [Ep 034]

Uncategorized May 09, 2019

Faith and Works.  That’s the subject of this week’s podcast.  The passage we’ll cover is James chapter 2 verses 14 through 26. It’s one of the most controversial passage in the Bible.  It’s a battleground passage for those who believe in salvation by faith alone in Christ alone and those who do not.  For centuries, Christians have debated its meaning.  And early in Martin Luther’s career, he proclaimed the epistle of James to be “strawy,” or confusing.  Indeed, today, many Christians are confused.  What does James mean when he says, “faith without works is dead?”  Does this contradict the teaching of the Apostle Paul? For Paul says in Ephesians 2:8,9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Are Paul and James in disagreement regarding faith and works?  Does the Bible contradict itself?  Well, the simple answer is no.  The Bible doesn’t contradict itself.  But, we do need to dig deep and analyze the epistle of James in order to discover what James is really saying.  So, we’re not confused.  And so we understand the Word of God.  Let’s get started.
